Ikaria Becomes Official "Blue Zone"

The island of Ikaria will soon become nearly autonomous in terms of energy consumption by using almost exclusively "Green Energy". Construction of the first in Europe environmentally friendly power production plant with the use of renewable energy sources in the form of a hydroelectric station has started in the Pezi Rahes region of Ikaria. The hydroelectric plant will operate like a closed circuit and utilise waterfall from three different levels beginning from an existing dam in Pezi located at a height of 700 metres.

The construction of the Pilot Hybrid Hydro-Electric Plant has a budget of 20 million euros and is expected to be completed by 2013 and provide 100% of electricity in winter months and 70% in summer months. The Greek state will cover 75% of the construction cost and the EU 25%. Ikaria already produces 25% of its energy via wind generated electricity.

고향인 이카리아섬으로 오개되었다고 한다. 하지만 36년이 지난 지금까지 살고 있고 현재 그의 나이는 97세가 된다고 한다. 그는 집에서 손수 농작물을 가꾸고

친구들과 와인을 마시면서 도미노 게임을 즐긴다고 한다.

그리스 이카리나 섬 주민들은 늦게까지 이웃과 함께 놀고 춤추며 잠이들고, 잠에서 깨어나면 그때 하루 일과를 시작한다고 하는데. 그 시간이 오전 11시 이후인 경우가 많다고 한다. 그래서 이섬에서 시간에 연연해 일을 하지 않는다고 한다. 그리고 낮잠은 주민들의 필수 라고 한다. 시계를 차고 다니는 사람들도 거의 없어서, 이웃에게 점심을 초대하면 손심이 아침에 올지 오후 6기가 다되어서 올지 알수가 없다고 한다. 또한 축제를 자주 열어서 이웃과 어울린다고 한다.

높은 실업률이 있는 섬이지만, 채소나 과일등을 직접길고 가축 또한 직접 기르면서 이곳 마을 사람들은 항상 신선한 채소를 식탁에 올린다고 한다. 또한 유제품과 고기와 같은 식단은 이곳에서 찾아보기 힘들다고 한다.

언제나 돈에 연연하지 않고 여유로운 삶의 방식속에 행복한 모습으로 살아가는 그들은 모습에서 우리는 행복을 볼수가 있을 것이다.
