'세계를 움직인'의 기준을 아래와 같이 했다고 한다.

   1) 인생관 내지 세계관의 바탕이 되었거나 그것의 변혁을 초래한 책

   2) 인지(人智)의 계발과 학문의 발전에 이바지한 책

   3) 사회 변동과 정치적 발전에 직접 자극이 된 책

 

서론에 보면,

흔히 말한다. 고전은 따분하고, 읽기 어렵다고.

오늘날처럼 변화가 심하고 가벼움이 선호되는 상황에서는

이런 말은 더욱 그렇다.

그러나 우리의 삶이 결코 놀이나 장난이 아니듯,

우리의 정신적 무게 또한 그러해서는 안 된다.

자신의 삶과 세계에 대한 진지한 모색,

이를 통해 우리는 자신의 나아갈 길을 찾을 수 있다.

인류가 여전히 세계적으로 널리 알려진 책들을 구해 읽고

여기서 참다운 자아와 세계를 찾는 것도 이와 같다.

이 안에는 숱한 사상의 편린들이 펼쳐져 있,

무수한 역사와 진리와 사랑이 흐르고 있다.

세상을 보는 통찰력, 자아에 대한 끊임없는 탐색,

인간으로서 무엇을 어떻게 하여야 할 것인가에 대한 물음과

해답을 구하는 데 이만한 것도 없다.
