Vineyards

Unique climate and ground conditions determine the typicality of the Etna grapes and wine. At the highest altitudes the changes of temperature between night and day (which are considerable, up to 13-15°C in July and August)allow a phenol and aromatic ripening that is essential for the colour and taste of the red grapes and for the aroma of the white wines. Furthermore, the volcanic ground (“ripiddu”) is very rich in minerals salts which supplies an equilibrated sugar content of the grapes and a proper relation between acids and alcohol.

Nerello mascalese

The nerello mascalese (niuriddu Mascalisi in Sicilian dialect) is a vine that grows in the Etna area in the province of Catania. It accounts for 80% – 100% to the production of Etna Doc wine grape native to the slopes of Etna, his birth is lost in the mists of time. It is grown between 350 and the 1000 s.l.m. Its name is due to the fact that for centuries has been cultivated in the area of the County of Mascali of land consisting, for the most part, from volcanic sands. Its grapes have a characteristic elongated shape and a pale red color. Matures very late and the harvest takes place between the second and third week of October. The wines produced with this grape are high in alcohol content (13-14 °) and intended for long aging. The wines obtained by vinification of this grape have a great variability depending on the area of cultivation. The nerello mascalese, in fact, like other noble grapes (Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir), has a high sensitivity to the territory of origin.

Nerello cappuccio

Nerello cappuccio (also known as Nerello mantellato) is a vine grown on the slopes of Etna in the province of Catania, and contributes to the production of Etna DOC wines. Nerello cap is a vine that grows on the slopes of Mount Etna between 350 and 900 meters above sea level. It contributes to about 20% to the production of Etna wine red. Its name is due to the particular shape of the tree, planted a sapling. Its origin is unknown but is grown locally by several hundred years. Its production has been declining year after year and for a time it was feared extinction. As the nerello mascalese is harvested very late, in mid-October.
