파블로 피카소(Pablo Ruiz y Picasso; 1881 – 1973)는,

앙리 마띠스(Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse; 1869 – 1954), 마르셀 듀샹(Marcel Duchamp; 1887 – 1968)과 함께

20세기 조형예술을 여는 대가 셋 중의 하나다.

회화, 조각, 판화, 도예, 무대 디자인 등 다양한 분야에서 작품을 남겼으며,

평생 약 12만 점에 이르는 엄청난 수의 작품을 만들어낸 최고의 다작가다.

나아가 또 흥미로운 점은, 그가 수많은 춘화를 그리기도 했다는 점이다.

이 점에서 조선의 혜원 신윤복에 비견된다.

혜원은 춘화 작가라는 이유 때문에 폄하되지만,

피카소는 전혀 달랐다.

그가 춘화 작가라는 점이 그의 평판에 전혀 문제가 안 됐다.

2001년 드디어 그의 춘화전이

빠리 중심의 뛸르리 공원 옆 '죄 드 뽐므 미술관(Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume)'에서

처음 열렸다.

그러나 역시 춘화전은 세인에게 찬반 시비와 많은 이야기거리를 만들어 줄 수밖에 없나 보다.

Erotic works by Picasso go on display in Paris

Picasso's work still has power to shock

Works of art by Picasso, classed as pornographic during his lifetime, have gone on display in Paris.

The French organisers of the first major retrospective of Picasso's risque(冶한, 猥褻의) artwork believe it would defy political correctness in the United States.

Picasso Erotique, on display at the Jeu de Paume museum in central Paris, shows that almost 30 years after his death the celebrated Spanish artist still has the power to shock.

The review spans drawings Picasso sketched as youth in Barcelona brothels to the better known contorted images of his wives and lovers.

The exhibition took two years to prepare and contains around 300 drawings, engravings, sculptures and paintings, many of which have been hidden in private collections and are going on public display for the first time.

Picasso has been called the most heterosexual artist of the 20th century and critics say the majority of his work is erotic since his creativity was triggered by a sexual impulse.

Shock value

The driving force behind the exhibition is Gerard Regnier, director of the Paris Picasso Museum.

He said: "This show could never be put on in the United States. The political correctness there acts as a new form of terrorism for the art world.

"A very strong course of what you might call pornography runs through Spanish art and literature and it must be remembered that Picasso obviously belonged to that tradition."

When Picasso exhibited the sketches shortly before his death in 1973, critics branded him a "dirty old man" and Mr Regnier is uncertain how the public now will react to pictures of couples copulating(性交하다) or women urinating.

He said: "I have no idea what to expect. We live in Europe in a great period of permissiveness but a backlash of morality is also sweeping in."

After leaving Paris, the collection will travel to Montreal's Musee des Beaux Arts and to Barcelona's Picasso Museum.
